Hellbender was born out of a response to some of the unhealthy trends in the tech community. The tech industry is a white male dominated industry with significant underrepresentation of veterans, women, trans, and non-white races. Tech tends to be owner and investor focused and obsessed with complexity and technology for their own sake. Tech has been a time-macho group that has no room for people with time commitment limitations or aware of the needs of team members. Too often, tech is driven by leaders who lack empathy, which when coupled with their reach goals, creates a culture of inadequacy and a fear of "not being enough," or imposter syndrome. If this sounds exhausting, that’s because the tech community has created a culture around burnout.
Hellbender is an attempt to build something new while trying to answer the following questions: Can a do-gooder tech firm exist that puts all of its stakeholders (customer, end user, owner, employee, local community, environment) on equal footing? Can we celebrate doing Government work, including defense work, and still attract a diverse workforce? Can we be open and transparent without surrendering competitiveness? Can a triple bottom line company be profitable in Government work?
